01.03.02 - 12:58 p.m. grapefruit. it's not REALLY that tasty a fruit. i mean, why do we even bother? even the nicest grapefruit has a weird sort of rather bitter aftertaste that lingers on the tongue. let's face it, it isn't a pleasant sensation. now, i have only eaten grapefruit two ways, prior to today: 1. cut in half, in a bowl. with, maybe sugar sprinkled on top. hopefully, someone went through and tried to cut the meat of the fruit free of the little membranes. of course, i've never been able to do that with any degree of skill, so the five times that i have actually gone to the trouble of preparing grapefruit thusly, i had a tough time getting the fruit out of its skin. 2. freed entirely of skin and membrane and everything else, in elegant little slices that - despite being liberated from constraining membranes - are still prettily intact, and mixed with similarly treated orange sections. my grandmother always prepares oranges and grapefruits like this. it tastes good. i don't know how she has the patience to do it, though. now, i had never, ever, EVER tried to eat a grapefruit the way you eat an orange - peeling it and sectioning and consuming it - before, that is, today. and, actually - it worked out pretty well. the slices taste better when you get rid of most of the membrane, but that's REALLY messy since the grapefruit is really juicy inside. i searched "how to eat a grapefruit," but didn't find anything specifically on topic. though i did learn that, in the wild, possums, jack rabbits, deer and coyotes like to eat grapefruit. hmmmm. oh, yeah. and i saw a really disturbing "texas orange cowboy." a round fruit with arms and legs sticking outta him, answering questions about grapefruit from all the little kiddies out there. and found a recipe for grilled grapefruit: cut grapefruit in half separate flesh from rind and membranes with grapefruit knife sprinkle with honey and cinnamon broil for 2-3 minutes in oven hmmm. dunno if i'll try it, but it sounds okay. and. that's it! bye!
